Reddit is where we spot stories early. A story only goes to #breaking-news when 2 independent sources report it, from news outlets around the world and journalist and outlet accounts on social media. Quotes are also checked against sources in their original language.
It depends on the news. A quiet midweek stays quiet, a derby or a deadline day does not. The bar is high on purpose: fading posts are discounted, #breaking-news needs two independent sources and memes have their own channel, so a ping in #breaking-news is worth a look.
