It depends on the news. A quiet midweek stays quiet, a derby or a deadline day does not. The bar is high on purpose: fading posts are discounted, #breaking-news needs two independent sources and memes have their own channel, so a ping in #breaking-news is worth a look.
Football, hockey and the NHL, Formula 1, tennis, the NBA, boxing and the Olympics, plus the general sports subreddits for everything else and the big meme subreddits.
